French built it, British used it :)
Trade between the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean (India to Straits of Malacca to Spice Islands, to China) dates from long before the British or French existed. However it had to include a land link from the Nile to the Red Sea or from the Med to the Persian Gulf. Unload one ship, trek across land, load another ship or take the ship apart and haul it over the desert as Egyptians did. The canal made direct shipping easy without this or going all the way around Africa as the Portuguese did after vasco de gama found the route.
Wait a sec and I will Google link something.
