After the Spanish-American War in 1898, the United States acquired several territories from Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris. These territories included:
- Puerto Rico - Became a U.S. territory and remains a U.S. territory to this day.
- Guam - Also became a U.S. territory and is still a U.S. territory.
- The Philippines - The U.S. acquired the Philippines, and it was an unincorporated territory of the U.S. until it gained independence in 1946.
- Wake Island - Though not directly mentioned in the Treaty of Paris, Wake Island was claimed by the U.S. during the Spanish-American War and is now an unorganized territory.
These acquisitions marked a significant expansion of U.S. influence and presence in the Caribbean and the Pacific.
