Which sentence sounds better?
*A 13 year old girl needs at least 1 hr. or exercise each day.

*A 13 year old female needs at least 1 hr. of exercise each day.

You certainly don't need "female girl" in one sentence; it's redundant.

I would go with the first sentence. The word "female" isn't used that much in informal language and since the word "girl" already implies that the person is of the female sex, sentence nr. 3 has a word too many.
