Alfred Wegener cited the following pieces of evidence to support his hypothesis of continental drift:

- Similar fossils have been found at different continents, which indicated that the continents were once joined.
Wegener did not support the idea that new oceanic crust formed between the continents or that the contraction of the Earth caused folded mountains. Instead, he proposed that the continents themselves moved apart over time.
