Literary Theme Interpret
Seeing a movie at the theaters with your family or friends is a heart filling experience. Walking in, getting tickets and popcorn, and whispering to your neighbor that the character should not do the stupid action he clearly plans to do next. As you come out of the movie, you talk about your favorite part, or what happened to keep the plot going, but without knowing it, you mostly talk about the theme.
What is theme? It is the message that a book, movie, or even poem is trying to portray to you. Theme can be anything. Whether you watch a horror movie and the theme is not to go in the basement alone, or if you watch a romantic movie and the message is just to be yourself.
Recently, I saw the movie Doctor Strange with my dad and uncle. It was a great movie, and constantly, I found myself learning from something that was said or done. The main idea of the movie is a man is once the best surgeon alive until he experiences a fatal car crash. The story is about how he must overcome obstacles of the world and obstacles of himself. He goes to place and discovers people with “super powers” and he himself must learn how to gain and control these powers. However, he must change his arrogant and negative attitude before he can harness healing and greatness. There are many messages one can gain from this movie, but the main theme is that you have to be open to anything, to expand your mind.
So, when you see Doctor Strange, or any movie, look for what the director or actors are trying to tell you. Interpret the message. What is important in life? Why should we learn the things we do? It’s all in the main idea, the plot, the theme.
