A: states’ rights
Nullification is a legal theory that a state has the right to nullify, or invalidate, any federal law which that state has deemed unconstitutional. This concept is closely associated with the idea of states' rights, where states assert their right to govern themselves and resist federal government interference. The concept was most prominently argued by John C. Calhoun, the 7th Vice President of the United States, in response to the Tariff of 1828, which was also known as the "Tariff of Abominations." However, while nullification can be related to tariffs (as in this historical example), it is fundamentally about the broader concept of states' rights.
