Here's a little info to help you identify between discrete and continuous variables. Discrete variables assume a finite number of values between any two points, like the number of children or the number of votes for a candidate in any election. Continuous variables assume an infinite number of values between any two points, like time or weight (which could extend to many decimal places, making the values much more precise). Another way of looking at discrete or continuous variables is a "count' will yield discrete data and 'measurement' will yield continuous data.
