1. Which of the following are key parts of Dalton's Atomic Theory (Click the 4 that apply)? (1 point)
a. All elements are composed of tiny indivisible particles called atoms***
b. Atoms of the same element are identical. The atoms of any one element are different from those of any other element
c. Atoms of different elements can physically mix together or can chemically combine to form compounds***
d. Chemical reactions occur when atoms are separated from each other, joined, or rearranged in a different combination***
e. Atomic nuclei contained the negatively charges electrons.***
f. Atoms retain their identity in a chemical reaction.
e is not right. Dalton didn't know anything about the structure of an atom
2. Which of the following statements is true about subatomic particles? (1 point)
a. The mass of a proton nearly equals the mass of an electron.***
b. Neutrons have no charge and are the lightest subatomic particle
c. Protons are positively charged and the lightest subatomic particle
d. Electrons are negatively charged and the lightest subatomic particle.***
a is not right. Note you checked two answers. d is ok.
3. As you move from left to right across the periodic table, which characteristics tend to increase? (2 points)
a. Atomic Size
b. ionization Energy***
c. ionic Size
d. Electronegativity***
4. Analyze the element listed in atomic notation. What are the characteristics? Select the 3 that apply. (3 points)
36 1-
Cl
17 There is no easy way to write this. The17 is a subscript to the left, the 36.1 is a superscript on the left.
a. It is chlorine with a mass of 17 amu.
b. It is chlorine with a mass of 36 amu.
c. It is chlorine with 36 neutrons.
d. It is chlorine with 17 neutrons.
e. It is chlorine with 19 neutrons.
f. It is chlorine with one less electron.
g. It is chlorine with one additional electron.
I'm confused here. First this is not written correctly. All of the numbers should be whole numbers; i.e., that 36.1 is not right. The left subscript is the atomic number (the number of electrons and the same number of protons), the left superscript is the mass number; i.e., the number of protons + the number of neutrons and the symbol is the element.

5. An element has an atomic number of 77, an atomic mass of 152, and is considered electrically neutral. How many protons, neutrons, and electrons does the element have? Please select the three correct values. (3 points)
a. 77 protons
b. 38 protons
c. 152 protons
d. 39 electrons
e. 77 electrons
f. 0 electrons
g. 152 neutrons
g. 0 neutrons
h. 77 neutrons
i. 75 neutrons
See my notation above. The atomic number is the number of protons. Also it is the number of electrons if the element is electrically neutral>. The mass number is the number of protons + the number of neutrons.
6. Which of the following statements is true about isotopes of the same element? Click on the 3 that apply (1 point)
a. Isotopes have the same number of protons***
b. Isotopes have the same number of electrons***
c. Isotopes have the same number of neutrons
d. Isotopes have the same atomic mass***
e. Isotopes have the same atomic number
d is not right
I hope this helps and that my reorganization isn't confusing.
