Which haloalkane would not undergo β-elimination to form an alkene?

1 answer

Haloalkanes in which the carbon attached to the halogen is quaternary (i.e. four substituents attached to it) or in which the halogen is attached to a sp2 hybridized carbon generally do not undergo β-elimination to form an alkene. Therefore, a haloalkane that falls under these categories would not undergo β-elimination to form an alkene. For example, tetrachloromethane (CCl4) or chlorobenzene (C6H5Cl) would not undergo β-elimination.
