The majority of the gastrointestinal flora, also known as gut microbiota, is found in the large intestine (colon). While the entire gastrointestinal tract hosts a diversity of microorganisms, the densely populated community of bacteria, archaea, viruses, and fungi is primarily located in the colon due to its larger volume and slower transit time, allowing for a rich and complex ecosystem. The small intestine also contains some microbiota, but in much lower numbers compared to the large intestine.
