Where does actual oxygen exchange take place in the human respiratory system
1 answer
The actual oxygen exchange takes place in the tiny air sacs called alveoli, which are located in the lungs. The alveoli are surrounded by pulmonary capillaries, through which blood flows. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses across the thin walls of the alveoli and into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide, a waste product, moves from the bloodstream into the alveoli to be exhaled. This process is known as pulmonary gas exchange.
