Hernando de Soto's exploration of America began in the region that is now the state of Florida. He landed on the west coast of Florida in 1539 and is known for his extensive journey through the southeastern United States, which included parts of present-day Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas.
