I don't agree with your statement. When you convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit, such as mm to cm to dm to m, you want to divide which means you move the decimal point to the left. Here is what I always taught my students to do. For example,
meters..................m
decimeters...........dm
centimeters...........cm
millimeters.............mm
Going UP the table move the decimal point to the left one place for each unit.
Going DOWN the table move the decimal point to right one place for each unit.
2 m = 20 dm = 200 cm = 2000 mm
meters..................m
decimeters...........dm
centimeters...........cm
millimeters.............mm
