It was not quick and easy. The Treaty of Paris was signed over a year after the final British surrender at Yorktown. Other countries (Spain, France) were involved in a multiple peace agreement signed on the same day. The British did not admit defeat, but agreed to a settlement with the "13 United States" so it could achieve a settlement with its other enemies.
