A writer should consider using multiple plotlines in the same story primarily in the following scenarios:
-
If they share characters and setting. This can create a richer narrative and allow for deeper character development, as the different plotlines can intersect and influence each other, adding layers to the story.
-
If they are loosely related to each other. This allows for a more complex narrative structure where different plotlines can reflect or contrast with each other, providing thematic depth and enhancing the overall story arc.
While it is possible to have unrelated plotlines (option 3) or plotlines in the same genre (option 1), they are less effective in enhancing the cohesion of the narrative. Unrelated plotlines may confuse readers, and having multiple plotlines that do not share any thematic or character connections might dilute the impact of the story.
