If you are referring to the entire class, you'd write/say "the freshman class this year" or "the freshman class of 2019" (meaning they'll graduate in 2019).
If you are referring to a group of individuals, but not the class as a whole, then you'd write/say, "The freshmen are behaving strangely" -- or some such.
When referring to an entire class body, such as 500 students, is it correct to say freshmen or freshman?

Thank you. I am saying "In a freshman class of 3500 students....."
