Emily Dickinson gained fame for her collection of nearly 1,800 poems after her death, when her sister insisted on publishing the work. Although Dickinson wrote prolifically during her lifetime, only a few of her poems were published during her lifetime, and it was her sister Lavinia who took the initiative to publish her poems after Dickinson's death in 1886.
