I interpret
"adding the square root of 16 and -8"
as
"adding the square root of 16 and the square root of -8"
which gives
sqrt(16)+sqrt(-8)
= 4+2√2 i
which is a complex irrational number.

If I interpret
"adding the square root of 16 and -8"
as
"the square root of the sum of 16 and -8", then
the result is
√(16-8)=√8=2√2
which is an irrational number.
