When a 1.1 gram ice cube is placed into a 10.0 mL graduated cylinder, the level of water inside the graduated cylinder raises 1.20 mL. What is the Density of the ice cube?

My Work: Density = 1.1g/10.0 mL + 1.20 mL?
my answer came out to be; Density= .0982 g/mL

There is a law called the Law of impenetrability which says that two objects can't occupy the same space at the same time. What this means is that the volume of the water in the graduated cylinder will rise an amount equal to the volume of the ice cube; i.e., the ice cube displaces its own volume. Since the water level was raised by 1.20 mL that means the volume is 1.2 mL so the density is mass/volume = 1.1g/1.20 mL = ? If your prof is picky about significant figures you should note that you are allowed only two (from the 1.1) so the answer should be rounds to two s.f.I ran this quickly on my calculator to obtain 0.916 which I would round to 0.92 which is about 10x larger than your answer.
