"Fruits Basket" is a popular Japanese anime series based on the manga of the same name by Natsuki Takaya. The story revolves around a high school girl named Tohru Honda who, after losing her mother in a car accident, ends up living in a tent in the woods. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she stumbles upon the house of her classmate Yuki Sohma and his relatives, Shigure and Kyo Sohma.
Tohru soon discovers the Sohma family harbors a unique and magical secret: thirteen members of the family are cursed to transform into animals of the Chinese zodiac (and a cat) when they are weak, stressed, or hugged by someone of the opposite sex. She learns this secret accidentally but is allowed to stay with them as long as she promises to keep it confidential.
The series delves deep into the personal and emotional struggles of each Sohma family member, revolving around themes of acceptance, forgiveness, love, and the breaking of longstanding curses. As Tohru becomes more involved with the Sohma family, she helps them confront their painful pasts and find hope for the future.
"Fruits Basket" is known for its compelling character development, emotional depth, and blend of humor and drama. The original anime adaptation aired in 2001, and a more faithful reboot, closely following the manga's storyline, was released starting in 2019.
