What's Hydride?

1 answer

As far as I know there is no "hydride" by itself but there are hydrides which are part of a chemical name for certain compounds. For example:
1. LiH is lithium hydride
2. NaH is sodium hydide
3. CaH2 and MgH2 which are calcium and magnesium hydride respectively.
A hydride is the combination of hydrogen with an element in which hydrogen has a -1 oxidation state as opposed to its usual oxidation state of +1.
