12! means 12 factorial
that means 12 times 11 times 10 times 9 times 8 times 7 times 6 times 5 times 4 times 3 times 2 times 1.
4! is 4 times 3 times 2 times 1
8! is 8 times 7 times......all the way down to 1.
Most people do this math using a calculator with a factorial key. If your teacher doesn't want that, there is a short cut.
12! divided by 8! 4!
12 x 11 x 10 x 9 x 8!
divide by 8! 4!
The 8! will cancel
12 x 11 x 10 x 9
divided by 4 x 3 x 2 x 1
4 x3 cancels with the 12
11 x 10 x 9
divided by 2
This math is a lot easier than multiplying out all of the numbers.
