“What would you like for your birthday?” Leilani’s stepfather, Paulo, asked her at dinner. Leilani thought for a long time, chewing her vegetables carefully.

“It’s probably too much,” she finally answered, her voice shy, “but I would really love to have a telescope.”

Her stepfather smiled kindly. “I think we could probably arrange that,” he replied. “What, in particular, are you hoping to see with it?”

Leilani ate a few more bites of her dinner. “Well, I enjoy looking at Orion and the Great Bear constellations, but what I am really hoping to take a closer look at is Earth.”

“Ah, yes,” Paulo said. “Earth certainly looks interesting in space. I love the way it shines with a slight blue radiance. Our scientists here on Mars think much of the planet must be covered in water for it to glow that color. They believe we will find life there when the planned rocket launch takes place later this year. Won’t that be exciting?”

Leilani considered this question. She had always liked to imagine that there were creatures on Earth. Perhaps creatures similar to her. The pictures she had seen revealed a blue surface dotted with green and scattered with swirling white clouds. It looked so pretty! Surely something or somebody must live on such a beautiful planet!
