What will probably happen to the national identity or individual states as the European Union becomes stronger and a more important economic force?

The national identities of the individual members of the E.U. will probably continue to slowly erode. It was hard for many people to give up their national currencies in favor of euros, but they did. As more movement occurs between the countries, separate languages are giving way to a lingua franca in this case, English. Ten years ago, I heard that Swiss parents were agitating for English to be taught as a second language in schools, despite the fact that Switzerland has four official languages -- and English isn't one of them. Switzerland, by the way, has not joined the E.U.
