what were the reason our forefathers divided the government into the legislative, executive and judicial branches.

It was basically so they could check the power. No one group would have total control. The Congress can't pass laws without going through the president, and the president can't pass laws without passing it through Congress. The same goes for the Judicial branch except they enforce laws.
