The Zimmermann Telegram was an intercepted telegram from a German secretary. Specifically, it was a secret diplomatic communication sent by the German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German ambassador in Mexico in January 1917. In the telegram, Germany proposed a military alliance with Mexico in the event that the United States entered World War I against Germany. Germany promised to support Mexico in recovering territories it had lost to the U.S., specifically Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The interception and revelation of this telegram significantly contributed to turning public opinion in the United States against Germany and ultimately led to the U.S. entering the war.
