What was the outcome of the Equal Rights Amendment?

1 answer

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution that sought to guarantee equal rights under the law regardless of sex. However, the ERA was never ratified by the required number of states and therefore did not become part of the Constitution. The deadline for ratification set by Congress expired in 1982, and efforts to resurrect and ratify the ERA have been ongoing since then. As of 2021, the ERA has been ratified by 38 states, but legal challenges remain as to whether the ratifications that occurred after the original deadline should be considered valid.
