The original purpose of the Constitutional Convention, which took place in Philadelphia in 1787, was to address and amend the Articles of Confederation. The Articles had established a weak central government that struggled to maintain order and effectively manage issues such as commerce, taxation, and interstate relations.
Delegates from the states convened with the intention of improving the existing framework of government but ultimately decided to create an entirely new constitution. This led to the drafting of the United States Constitution, which established a stronger federal government with a system of checks and balances among the three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial.
