The most significant issue during the Reconstruction period (1865-1877) was the struggle over the integration of formerly enslaved people into American society and the political, social, and economic implications of that integration. This challenge encompassed several dimensions, including the establishment of new laws and amendments, such as the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, aimed at guaranteeing civil rights and voting rights for African Americans.

The period also dealt with the resistance from Southern states, where many white citizens sought to maintain their social hierarchy and prevent African Americans from gaining political power. This resistance manifested in the implementation of Black Codes, the rise of white supremacist groups like the Ku Klux Klan, and the eventual establishment of Jim Crow laws. The conflict between federal authorities and state governments regarding civil rights enforcement further complicated the situation. Overall, the inability to achieve lasting solutions to racial inequality and political representation created significant instability and set the stage for future challenges.
