Before Franklin and Wilkins conducted their studies of DNA, the following three options were known:
- DNA is found in the nucleus of a cell.
- Organisms store and transmit genetic information.
- Cells contain protein molecules.
The double-helix structure of DNA was elucidated later, based on Franklin's x-ray diffraction images and Watson and Crick's subsequent model. The idea that the human genetic code consists of 50,000 genes was also not established at that time; the understanding of human genetics was still evolving.
