He is called the father of Texas because he brought the 300 anglo colonist families in to a land grant he obtained from the Spanish before Mexico split from Spain.
Damon is correct! :) Stephen Austin brought 300 families to Texas. He helped start the Mexican Revolution that freed Texas.
