y = -3x
3x + 2y =6
Substitute
3x + 2(-3x) = 7
3x - 6x = 7
-3x = 7
x = - 2 1/3
To find y, substitute -2 1/3 for x in the first equation.
3x + 2y =6
Substitute
3x + 2(-3x) = 7
3x - 6x = 7
-3x = 7
x = - 2 1/3
To find y, substitute -2 1/3 for x in the first equation.

use -3x for y
(It is called "substitution")
3 x + 2 (-3x) = 6
3x - 6 x = 6
-3 x = 6
x = -2
y = -3x = 6
(It is called "substitution")
3 x + 2 (-3x) = 6
3x - 6 x = 6
-3 x = 6
x = -2
y = -3x = 6

thank you guys so so much! I was trying to use elimination for this and it wasn't working at all.

Ms. Sue
3x + 2(-3x) = 6
x = -2
x = -2
Answered by
Damon
3 x + y = 0
3 x + 2 y = 6
---------------
-y = -6
so
y = 6
then x = y/-3 = -2
3 x + 2 y = 6
---------------
-y = -6
so
y = 6
then x = y/-3 = -2
