What is the platt amendment
1 answer
The Platt Amendment was an amendment to the 1901 Army Appropriations Bill, which imposed several conditions on Cuba before the United States would withdraw its military forces from the country following the Spanish-American War. The conditions included granting the United States the right to intervene in Cuban affairs to preserve independence and maintain peace, allowing the U.S. to establish naval stations in Cuba, and requiring Cuba to not enter into any agreements with foreign powers that would compromise its independence. The amendment effectively made Cuba a protectorate of the United States and severely limited its sovereignty. The Platt Amendment was eventually repealed in 1934 as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's Good Neighbor Policy towards Latin America.
