What is the function of a mitochondrion
1 answer
The function of a mitochondrion is to produce energy for the cell through a process called cellular respiration. Mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouse of the cell because they generate a high amount of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the cell. They also play a role in cellular metabolism, regulation of cell cycle and cell growth, and the control of cell death (apoptosis). Mitochondria are unique organelles in that they contain their own DNA and can replicate independently of the cell.
