There are two ways in which you can report (write) what someone has said or asked: direct address and indirect address.

Direct --
She asked me, "Do you like science fiction movies?"
He told me, "My sister is visiting me this week."

Indirect --
She asked me if I like science fiction movies.
He told me that his sister was visiting him this week.
