what is oxidation state of NO2

3 answers

The molecule, NO2, is zero as is all compounds. N in NO2 is +4 and O in NO2 is -2 each.
so....can u explain to me why NO3- the N is five?
NO3^-.
O is -2 each; there are 3 of them for -6 total. N must be +5 to leave a -1 charge on the ion [+5 +(-6) = -1]
