Miles Morales is a fictional character appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics. He was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli and made his first appearance in Ultimate Fallout #4 in August 2011.
In the Marvel Comics universe, Miles Morales is a teenager living in Brooklyn, New York. He is of African-American and Puerto Rican descent. After the death of Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man, in the Ultimate Marvel universe, Miles gains his own spider-like abilities from a genetically-altered spider. He takes up the mantle of Spider-Man to honor Peter's memory and protect New York City.
Miles' origin story closely follows the classic Spider-Man narrative of being bitten by a radioactive spider. However, in his case, the spider was genetically modified and escaped from a lab. Miles Morales eventually emerges as a beloved and popular character within the Marvel Universe, gaining his own ongoing comic book series, as well as appearing in various animated adaptations and video games.
