What is cytokinesis

1 answer

Cytokinesis is the process by which a cell divides its cytoplasm and organelles to form two daughter cells after the completion of nuclear division (mitosis or meiosis). It is the final stage of cell division and involves the physical separation of the two daughter cells. In animal cells, this typically involves the formation of a cleavage furrow, which constricts the cell membrane and cytoplasm to eventually pinch off and separate the two daughter cells. In plant cells, a cell plate forms between the two daughter nuclei, eventually developing into a new cell wall to separate the daughter cells.
