The similarity between the first-quarter moon and the third-quarter moon is that the moon is located perpendicular to Earth and the sun.
In both of these phases, the sun and the Earth are positioned such that the moon is at a right angle to the line connecting the Earth and the sun. This results in the half of the moon that is illuminated by the sun being visible from Earth.
