During transcription, RNA polymerase enzyme binds to a specific gene on the DNA molecule and unwinds the DNA helix. The enzyme then reads the gene and creates a complementary messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule by adding RNA nucleotides. This process results in the formation of a single-stranded mRNA molecule that carries the genetic information from the DNA to the ribosomes for protein synthesis.
