When a candle is lit?

The wick burns, and vaporizes paraffin (wax) below it. The paraffin vapor also burns as it mixes with air outside the yellow flame. The light comes mostly from carbon particles inside the flame, which have not burned yet. They burn up later as they pass out of the yellow flame.
