Before the Revolutionary War began, colonists were frustrated by taxation without representation. They did not like that British Parliament imposed taxes and laws on them without their consent. In 1774, the colonies held a meeting in Philadelphia called the First Continental Congress. It was organized to address colonial grievances and organize resistance against British rule. Finally, in 1776 the 13 colonies issued the Declaration of Independence. This document declared their intentions to break away from British rule and establish their own government.
