A class system is one in which people are divided into social classes by tradition and by law. People usually inherit their social class from their parents, although in the Western world today, some people attain high status by their wealth -- or sink to a low status because of their lack of wealth.

The class system was prevalent in Europe during the Feudal times, and remnants of it persisted until World War II. India is a prime example of a rigid class system. It's been outlawed, but still exists. Check these articles for more information.
