What Chromosomes Tell Us

A karyotype is the complete set of chromosomes of an individual. This is a picture of the human chromosomes and as expected there are 46 chromosomes. The number of chromosomes in human cells is 46 with 22 autosomal pairs, one of each from the mother and one of each from the father, and 2 sex chromosomes Females have 2 X chromosomes and males have an X and a Y chromosome. The only human cells that do not contain pairs of chromosomes are reproductive cells, or gametes, which carry just one copy of each chromosome. This image is called a karyogram. A karyogram allows a geneticist to determine a person's karyotype: a pictorial representation of their chromosomes.

Question 1:
Which of these does not correctly explain why there are pairs of chromosomes in this karyotype?

Correct Answer: C
Gametes each contain a pair of chromosomes.
Explanation: Gametes (sperm and eggs) contain only one copy of each chromosome, not pairs. Humans have pairs of chromosomes in somatic cells, which contain two copies of each chromosome (one from each parent).

Question 2:
Imagine that this is your karyogram, showing your chromosomes. What information would your karyogram give scientists about you? All BUT ONE could apply.

Correct Answer: B
Your personality.
Explanation: A karyogram can provide information about genetic traits and characteristics, such as gender, potential physical traits (like eye color and height), but it does not determine personality.
