Collectivism is the situation in which the individual acts for the good of the group or community. One advantage is that the community benefits from the contributions of all of its members. The Soviet Union had a collectivist system. So did some altruistic small communes in the U.
S. and Europe. The desires and ambitions of the individual are sacrificed for the greater good.

Individualism is basically "every man for himself." The individual get what he wants, often at the expense of the community. In the early days of our country, individualism reigned, although there were many instances of more idealistic collectivist behaviors.
