What are the exaxt solutions of

(x-2)^2=1

I'm not sure how to set this one up

I believe it goes ..
x-2=SQRT1 x+2=-SQRT1
x+2=1 x-2=1
x=3 x=-1

I tried to substitute and 3 comes out correct, but -1 is not equalling the other side, can you tell me where I did this wrong..?

1 answer

(x-2)(x-2)= X^2-4x+4 = 1
X^2-4x+3=0
Use quadratic equation and you get X=3,X=1

ALternatively use could take the square of both sides and get x-2=+/- 1 so x=2 +/- 1 so X=3,1
