Wendy is taking a cab ride. The ride costs $1.20 for the first 0.5 km, and $0.90 for each additional 0.5 km. If the trip costs $12.00, how many kilometres was the cab ride?

2 answers

1.20 + .90k = 12.00
Solve for k.
Let the number of km be k
cost = 1.2 + (2k - 1)(.9)
(2k-1)(.9) = 12-1.2
1.8k - .9 = 10.8
1.8k = 11.7
k = 6.5

The trip was 6.5 km

check: cost = 1.2 + (2*6.5 - 1)(.9) = 12
