The male testes produce about 500 milion sperm a day. The female ovaries produce about one egg a month. Semen ejaculated during intercourse typically contains 150-500 million sperm. If one of these sperm penetrates the egg, fertilization occurs, and the zygote (fertilized egg) starts to grow. It implants itself in the lining of the uterus to receive nutrients from the mother. It develops into an embryo. After 8 weeks, it is called a fetus.
