“We are all Treaty People” Movie Sheet
Before 1764: Beginning (first 6 min)
One thing I learned from this video that I did not know after our first two units is that many of the early settlers relied heavily on the knowledge and assistance of Indigenous peoples for survival and navigation in North America.
1764: Treaty of Niagara
The Treaty of Niagara was an agreement made between the British Crown and various Indigenous nations. It aimed to establish peace and respect between the parties, ensuring mutual support and understanding.
There were 24 different Indigenous nations that were a part of the alliance.
When the Treaty was signed, the two promises made to the Indigenous nations were:
-
Recognition of Indigenous land rights and sovereignty.
-
Assurance of mutual protection and support in times of conflict.
