I believe the Civil War was not entirely inevitable and that compromises could have potentially prevented it. While tensions between the North and South were growing over issues like slavery, there were moments when leaders tried to find middle ground. For instance, the Missouri Compromise of 1820 attempted to keep a balance between free and slave states, showing that compromise was possible. Additionally, the Compromise of 1850 tried to address these disagreements but ultimately failed to satisfy both sides. The Dred Scott decision in 1857 and the rise of extremist groups like the abolitionists added to the conflict, but if more politicians had focused on negotiation instead of division, it might have been possible to avoid war. Therefore, while the underlying issues were serious, better dialogue and compromise could have changed the course of history.
